An unfulfilled need leads to money left on the table

Outschool had been missing out on a big opportunity by making it very difficult for families to book multiple recurring weekly 1-on-1 tutoring sessions. Our booking flow was optimizing for users booking single appointments at a time.

Through user interviews, we had uncovered that families who have higher LTV were engaging in high dosage tutoring - and were finding work arounds in the site to be able to book and manage multiple recurring sessions at a time. Because sessions build on each other, the higher intensity tutoring experiences tended to yield much better results.

This unfulfilled need led to users not harnessing the full value of our experience, and the company leaving money on the table.

Treat it as a subscription, not appointments

One big issue with the previous tutor scheduling flow was it treated bookings as appointments, which didn’t support the idea of multiple recurring sessions. My thought is that we should treat booking with a tutor as “subscribing” to them, versus booking individual meetings. The regular
